Black maca root naturally contains compounds called macamides and macaenes, while ginseng root contains ginsenosides. Together, these two roots are traditionally used as part of a balanced diet to support normal energy metabolism, rather than working as a short-term stimulant.

Your Questions Answered
What is black maca?
Black maca is one of the colour types of maca (Lepidium meyenii), a root vegetable grown at high altitude in the Andes of Peru. It belongs to the same plant family as broccoli, cabbage and kale, and has been dried, cooked or ground into powder as part of the traditional Andean diet for generations. Black is one of the less common colours of the root.
What is black maca good for?
Maca has long been eaten as a food in Peru, and research into its effects is still limited, with mostly small, short studies. There are no authorised health claims for maca or ginseng in the UK, so we don't make any. Speak to your GP if you are considering it for a specific health reason. Read our black maca complex guide for more on the root and the research.
What is the difference between black, red and yellow maca?
They are colour types of the same plant, Lepidium meyenii, grown in the same region. Yellow is the most common. Red and black are less common and differ slightly in their natural plant compounds, such as macamides and glucosinolates. All three are used in the same way, as a dried root powder.
Why combine maca with ginseng?
Black maca and ginseng root (Panax ginseng) are two traditional roots, one from the Andes and one from East Asian herbal tradition, often taken together. Our complex puts both in every capsule: 503mg of black maca root and 67mg of ginseng root, 570mg in total.
How much black maca should I take a day?
Our daily serving is 3 capsules (3 × 570mg = 1,710mg), which gives 1,509mg of black maca root and 201mg of ginseng root. Do not exceed the stated daily dose, and if you take regular medicines, ask your GP or pharmacist first.
When and how should I take black maca?
Take the 3 capsules with a meal and a full glass of water. Morning or lunchtime suits most people, as ginseng can affect sleep in some people if taken late in the day. Taking it at the same time each day matters more than the exact time. Our black maca guide covers how to take it in more detail.
How long does maca take to work?
There is no fixed time. Most studies on maca have lasted between 6 and 12 weeks, so take it consistently with food, and review with your GP if you are taking it for a specific reason.
What are the side effects of black maca and ginseng?
Maca is a food in Peru and is usually well tolerated. Ginseng can cause trouble sleeping, headaches and stomach upset in some people. Taking the capsules with food usually helps with any stomach upset. Stop taking it and speak to your GP if you notice anything unusual.
Can I take black maca and ginseng with medication?
Ginseng may interact with blood pressure medicines, blood thinners such as warfarin, and diabetes medicines. If you take any prescription medicine or are under medical supervision, speak to your GP or pharmacist before taking this supplement.
Can I take maca while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No, we don't recommend it. There is not enough safety research on maca or ginseng supplements in pregnancy or breastfeeding, so speak to your GP or midwife instead.
Does maca make you gain weight?
There is no good evidence that maca causes weight gain. Our 3-capsule serving contains under 2g of root powder, which provides a negligible number of calories.
Is this black maca complex vegan?
Yes. The capsules are made from plant-based HPMC, with no gelatin, and the formula is suitable for vegans. It is also gluten free and dairy free, with no major allergens.
